An Overview of the UK Visa Grantedto Chinese Nationals in 2023

UK Home Office published National statistics: Summary of latest statistics on 29th Febru-ary 2024. This summary showed that there were 3.40 million entry clearance visas granted in 2023, 20% higher than 2022 and 7% higher than prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pan-demic. For the specific number of visas granted to Chinese nationals in 2023, we were in-formed that:

• There were 550,002 visas granted to Chinese nationals in 2023.

• There were 414,319 visit visas granted to Chinese nationals in 2023. Chinese nationals are the second most common nationality granted visit visas, accounting for 21% of the total.

• There were 109,174 sponsored study visas granted to Chinese national main applicants in 2023. Chinese nationals accounted for the second highest proportion (24%) of sponsored study visas granted to main applicants in 2023.

CBBC is the UK’s leading China business organisation, helping our Members and Clients grow their business with and between the UK and China, and promoting trade and investment links. Trade between China and the UK has increased in 2023. We would like to share the following trends with you for your reference, based on the data gathered from the CBBC visa support service for the trade delegation.

Visiting China 访问中国

• CBBC has facilitated 138 applications for Chinese visas from the UK since April of last year. Applicants visited China primarily to take part in international exhibitions, locate distributors and meet with representatives of Chinese universities. Indeed, those from the education industry accounted for the majority of the applications.

• Earlier this year, the Chinese Embassy in the UK lowered visa costs and simplified the application process, meaning applicants can now visit the Chinese Visa Application Service Centre directly without having to schedule an appointment in advance. In addition, all visas issued in the UK for British citizens are two-year multi-entry visas following a bilateral agreement between the British and Chinese governments.

• CBBC also supports visits to the UK. Over the last 12 months, CBBC has helped over 60 Chinese delegations – often including government representatives – to obtain nearly 300 British visas.

• The primary objective of most government delegations visiting the UK is to sustain trade between the two nations, such as through identifying relevant British partners and promoting a Chinese locality’s major industries to regional governments across the UK. Many delegations to the UK pay a visit to our London office as well, so as to learn more about how our countrywide network of specialists are supporting bilateral trade and investment.

UK Visa Briefing: Visitor, Student, Working Visa

CBBC is working closely with UKVI, Visit Britain, VFS Global and other stakeholders in the sector to land key messaging to Chinese leisure and business travelers to the UK. In April, CBBC,in collaboration with UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) and VFS Global, hosted in-person visa briefings in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.

Looking ahead, we hope to assist in even more business visits to China. We’re pleased to see air-route capacity rebuilding between China and UK with existing routes at between 60-70% pre pandemic levels; and new routes such as JuneYao Airlines launching their route from Shanghai to Manchester on 3rd July.

Holders of ordinary passports from the above six countries may enter China visa-free for business, tourism, visiting relatives and friends and transit for no more than 15 days as it will help promote people-to-people exchanges and aid economy opening-up and business links to develop between our two countries. It will remain an advocacy point for CBBC.
